ANUAL WINE TASTING FUNDRAISER FEBRUARY 23, 2008

February was a busy month for the St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation with two
fundraisers in support of its annual Valentine’s Day “ladies only”spay campaign. Our
annual wine tasting at Taloula Mango restaurant on February 23rd featured a local
wine supplier and was our most successful  ever with over $4000  raised, which will
almost completely fund the campaign. The second activity held on the boardwalk terrace
of the same restaurant involved island visitors.  On Valentine’s Day, Foundation
volunteers set up a signboard with a big red foil heart.  Tourists were asked to donate
a dollar to receive a small paper heart on which they could write a Valentine to their
own pet and pin  it on the board. Many tourists tell us that they miss their pets while
away on vacation so they were delighted with the idea.  Some merely wrote their pet’s
name and the city where they live.  Others created a cute little message as well.  While
earning only a couple hundred dollars, nevertheless the project did show tourists that
St. Maarten helps homeless animals, particularly as tourists  express concern about
the loose dogs on the beach. Pet owners interested in sterilizing their female dog or
cat during this campaign needed only contact participating veterinarians for an
appointment.  And while reserved for “spay ladies,” because of Valentine’s Day,
owners of male pets could contact the Foundation  for information on how their
pets could qualify for other arrangements.
