The St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation was re-activated in September 1992 as a non- profit organization dedicated to promoting humane treatment of animals. Please read this and find out what we do for animals in Dutch St. Maarten.

“Just as education is the answer to violence, education is also the answer to caring for animals.” For the past eleven years, the Animal Welfare Foundation has distributed a colorful newspaper  to more than 8,000 children. The paper is called KIND (Kids In Nature’s Defense) NEWS and is published monthly by the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education, a division of the Humane Society of the United States. Available in three reading levels, KIND NEWS teaches respect for people, animals and the earth. The Foundation also encourages children to think about the responsibility of pet ownership and the humane treatment of animals through sponsoring school-wide creative competitions. The Foundation collects and donates videos, lesson plans, and brochures about humane education to schools on the Dutch-side of the island.

“It is more humane to prevent reproduction, than to destroy offspring.”

Based on this philosophy, the Animal Welfare Foundation encourages the sterilization of animals,

while the Foundation’s adoption policy mandates spay/neuter treatment for all adopted animals.

“The welfare of animals concerns us all, every day of the week.”

The Animal Welfare Foundation operates and funds a Volunteer Ambulance Team and two Adoption Centers, a Free Taxi Service to local vets for residents and pets without transportation and Free Mange Treatments for people without the means to provide care for their pets.

- Dutch St. Maarten does not have the luxury of a well-funded Animal Shelter -

What we do have, however, is the invaluable support of 3 local veterinarians, a wonderful team of volunteers to help us with our projects and a dedicated board of the Foundation, constantly developing new and innovative ways to address and fund animal welfare on our island.
