ANIMALWELFARE DOG SHOW SUNDAY JUNE 3,2007

ANUAL WINE TASTING FUNDRAISER FEBRUARY 23, 2008

The St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation will hold its annual Dog Show on Sunday, June 1th from 1 pm – 4:30 pm at Emilio Wilson Park.

Besides classes organized by size and pure-or mixed breed categories, crowd- pleasing novelty classes such as Best Kiss will be offered. . Ribbons to 4th Place and trophies to winners will be awarded with donations from a local dog food supplier as prizes for novelty classes.  A modest entry fee entitles participants to all classes and activities. The day will start off with an obstacle course where owner-and-dog combinations will have to run and jump together and a Grand Parade. There will be an obedience demonstration by a professional dog trainer, who will also answer questions and give training tips.

In May the Foundation is holding its annual Spring Spay campaign with the release of 50 free sterilization certificates to the public. Pet owners interested in sterilizing their female dog or cat during this campaign  contact participating veterinarians directly for an appointment

Two fundraising events in February are funding the campaign this year:

One, a wine tasting evening  showcasing labels  represented by a local wine merchant and second, a signboard with a big red heart  set up on the Boardwalk on which tourists could donate a dollar to pin a  Valentine to their pet.  Some merely wrote their pet’s name and the city where they live on the board.  Others created a cute little message to pin up on the board. Many expressed their approval of the fact that St. Maarten is doing so much for the island’s animals.

ANNUAL REPORT OF ACTIVITIES

The Board of the St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation presented its Annual Report at the January 2008 monthly meeting.

2007’s Activities were as follows:

Home visits:   507 (taxis, aid, mange treatments)

Sterilizations:* 501 (four campaigns concentrating on female pets)

Collected: 371 (unwanted,  stray, or injured, includes goats and birds).

Adoptions: 78**

*We offered the majority of the sterilizations free::  Have a Heart Valentines Spay, April International Spay Month, SummerSpay, World Animal Day Spay.

**2007 is lower because the Animal Hospital of the Netherlands Antilles chose to run our former adoption center there according to their own policies and at their own cost.   Other adoptions were handled separately by Animals R Friends.

Again this year, Kind News  educational humane materials were provided free for every Dutchside school child according to reading level and distributed every month to all the schools.

The Foundation held five public awareness events: designed to promote responsible pet ownership. (three  in conjunction with local schools) : dog show, dog wash,  2 dogwalkathons, April spay fair,  wine tasting fundraiser.

REMARKS OF NOTE BY FOUNDATION PRESIDENT SU WATHEY:

“We feel it is very important for organizations that receive donations to be open about how those monies are spent. We are also very proud of the work our volunteers do and take pride in showcasing their dedication.   To give just one example, since 1998 when the Animal Ambulance Team  began  its activity, volunteers have removed  4059 animals from the streets and accepted litters from residents.   The resulting benefit to the island’s tourism  image as a clean and caring community cannot be underestimated.

We cannot conclude our year without also crediting the local veterinary clinics.  Without the support of the doctors and their staffs our work would not be possible.   Added to the above thanks must be the many unreported incidents whereby concerned island residents rescued injured animals and brought them to the clinics or to the Adoption Centers on their own.”
